Hello,
I'd like to propose the following internet-draft for DS3 Supplemental
MIB. It has been derived from rfc1407 DS3 MIB, rfcdraft DS3 MIB and
rfcdraft DS1 Supplemental MIB (thanks to authors T. Cox, K. Tesink,
M. Ahmed, D. Fowler and M. Greene for paving the way). The style is
more in line with the standard DS3 and SONET rfc MIBs.
The draft reflects the following the major design decisions where it
differs from the referenced MIBs.
1. I did not provide MIB objects for supporting resetting various
tables/counters. This is because it can be down at the NMS side on
the host. The advantage is that the switch then never loses any
historical data on the switch side and we can get the desired
functionality from the host nms side. This can be debated and if
need be I can add objects to reset/default each of the tables.
2. I defined the Near End (NE) and Farr End (FE) objects in one set of
tables. This is two make it easier on the implementor, who then
needs to support only on set of NMS functions and action routines.
It also decreases the code size and simplifies the maintainability.
In the case of the original specification I presume it made more
sense to separate the two in separate tables because NE is mandatory
and FE is optional. Here everything is optional.
In addition to ANSI T1.231-1993 counters, I have also included support
for counters at PLCP, ADM, and TC layers as needed by other Bellcore
General Requirements.
I hope that we can consider this draft MIB ground zero and work out way
up by satisfying most people's needs. I look forward to hearing comments
from other people.

Abstract
This memo defines an experimental portion of the Management
Information Base (MIB) for use with network management protocols in
the Internet community. In particular, it describes supplemental
objects used for managing DS3 and E3 interfaces. This document is a
companion document with Definitions of Managed Objects for the
DS3/E3 MIB rfc1407 [6], DS3/E3 Draft MIB rfcTBD [14], DS1/E1/DS2/E2
Supplemental MIB rfcTBD [15], and ATM-MIB rfc1695 [16]. This MIB is
designed to provide support for ANSI T1.231-1993 standard and other
DS3 related information. This MIB's support is optional.

has these types of interfaces because of the additional
processing and storage capabilities that are required.
