Ben, On 5.5: I am fairly certain that a MUST in this document does not preclude a future document from making the change you specified as a doc that updates this one. For the warning in 5.9 and 5.10: I added a single disclaimer line to the end of both sections citing back to the variant table. Commit: https://github.com/ietf-wg-uuidrev/rfc4122bis/commit/4a515cb3bf74953b5e3169f281a90004bbba6961 Thanks, -----Original Message----- From: Uuidrev <uuidrev-bounces@ietf.org> On Behalf Of Ben Sent: Thursday, October 26, 2023 2:00 PM To: Kyzer Davis (kydavis) <kydavis=40cisco.com@dmarc.ietf.org> Cc: uuidrev@ietf.org Subject: Re: [Uuidrev] Last (hopefuly) comments on rfc4122bis Hi Kyzer (and others), Thanks for answering each comment and taking action on some. One of those answers had a new question. I will answer that one here and also want to say something about the SHULD/RECOMMENDED downgrade: - Section 5.5: The reason I added this point is because it isn't a MUST to use UUIDv8 if there are other UUID variants or versions that allow SHA-256. For example, some future UUIDv9 or UUIDv10. Those aren't there at this moment, so yes, now they MUST use UUIDv8 because there is no other way, but this should definitely be changed in some future RFC when UUIDv8 isn't the only lucky one. - Section 5.10: I think it is important to be clear. It doesn't have to be a long text. Just some note "Take care", so that implementers know those UUIDs fall in a out-of-scope range and don't do anything stupid while making a (new) library. It isn't a big deal, just some small text. I think if above comment is done, the RFC is able to get published. I'm only afraid for Section 6.6, so I actually hope that nobody registers any namespace ID, because I don't fully like the current idea and want to understand the history about it more, but I also don't want this issue to be stagnating the publication of the RFC. Lets do it this way, find out the history and try to change/restrict the registration policy in some next RFC. I assume "UUID Variant" and "UUID Special Forms" is a task for another RFC, seems okay to me. Let go publishing!!!
