“The cache directory” being ~/.caches/xml2rfc ?
(This is where I dump copies of various sources of reference files, and also ask kramdown-rfc to put its own cache:

KRAMDOWN_REFCACHEDIR=/Users/cabo/.cache/xml2rfc

but I haven’t examined in a while how this is actually used.)
