[xml2rfc] Compacting an ID reference

ID references tend to be long and make for long reference tags and high 
indents in the reference section:

The FAQ's 'answer' (sec 3.5) is to have you 'hardcode' the reference 
yourself instead of using the ones provided.


Is there a simpler way?
