FWIW, I just had a report from another attendee than none of his credit cards would work to buy his shinkansen ticket from Tokyo to Hiroshima. I can't stress enough that, although the situation is improving, credit cards are still MUCH less common here than in most of the rest of the world, and even places that nominally take them, you should be prepared for foreign cards to fail. (i.e., have Japanese cash on hand, and/or a backup plan.) --Rod
