I’m not sure that’s a supportable statement. Anecdotally I see lots of people joining WiFi in hotels and coffee shops pretty freely and without concern.

Certainly there is a class of user who does take extra steps to use things like VPNs, but they are the exception and not the rule. The global reports on internet traffic from Sandvine and Cisco show that the general user is not taking such action as a vpn or using a DNS service from big centralized companies. Yes some are, but the traffic volumes in multiple reports show that the general user is not.

The general user is using their networks suggested choices for DNS and they seem quite ok with that. I say this because they can change it in most networks (Corp networks often being the exception) to one of the centralized services that have been available for some time. Yet they have not made that choice as shown by public global reports which show that dns traffic to those other services is working hard to break 10% of total dns traffic.

So according to the available data, it’s not true that general end user philosophy is to trust a few big companies more than most Network operators.
