The OMNI interface spec is intending to specify a new interface type for IPv6. Like any
"IPv6-over-(foo)" document, the spec therefore conforms to a standard form used by
common interface types (e.g., RFC2464, etc.). However, the OMNI interface is a virtual
(not physical) interface that is configured over multiple underlying interfaces that may
themselves be either physical or virtual. Think of the OMNI interface as either an actual
or imaginary omni-purpose "lid" over an underlying multilink landscape (hence the name).
Earlier documents (e.g., RFC5558, RFC7847, etc.) have presented similar models, but the
OMNI spec intends to bring all of the details together in one place to provide a fully
functioned interface. Please bring any discussion points regarding the OMNI virtual
interface model under this thread.
