Hi all,

Summarizing some events, thoughts, and next steps from the IETF 119
session on multiple suffixes:

* We failed, once again, to achieve consensus on the draft. We've been
at it, on and off, for 5+ years.

* We seem to have consensus that suffixes were not well thought
through when they were introduced.

* Advice provided by this group on suffixes in the past, to the
JSON-LD WG specifically, was probably wrong.

* It is not clear what discussions or text would result in consensus
to the current draft direction.

IOW, I no longer believe that the group is going to be able to come to
consensus on supporting the concept of multiple suffixes no matter how
much text we write on the subject, and I dare say, the concept of
structured suffixes as something that is actively promoted going
forward is probably not a good idea either.

I took a couple of action items from the meeting today:

1. Float the idea of rescinding the requests for all media types that
use structured suffixes from the JSON-LD, DID, and VC WGs at W3C.
Gather feedback and report it to this group. We can tally objections
via the number of arrows in my back upon my return.

2. Provide the current set of media types from each group that use
structured suffixes and the alternates if we abandon the current
direction of the multiple suffixes draft.

3. Track down Mark Nottingham to analyze his repressed feelings about
structured suffixes. Approaches might include Freudian psychoanalysis,
delving into his childhood, or peyote. His choice, of course. :P

4. See what Martin Thomson and W3C TAG would like to see happen in this space.

5. Raise issues in the issue tracker to gather feedback.

If there are other items that can help us transcend this multi-year
log jam, please suggest concrete directions.

This has been one of the least fun games of "go fetch me a rock" that
I have ever played. :)
