DNS at IETF 118

The IETF met in Prague in the first week of November 2023, and, as usual, there was a flurry of activity in the DNS-related Working Groups. Here’s a roundup of those DNS topics I found to be of interest at that meeting.

Event Wrap: IETF 118

APNIC participated in IETF 118, held from 4 to 10 November in Prague, Czech Republic. The event welcomed 1,806 participants. As well as the usual tracks, there was also a Hackathon and a Codesprint. View the agenda for more information.

Internet Standards Observatory: Selected Research Projects on Internet standards and fragmentation announced

In the ever-evolving landscape of the Internet, discussions are continuously underway within standards development organisations (SDOs) about how the Internet will adapt to meet the demands of future networks and emerging technologies. ... “QUIC, or the battle that never was: a case of re-infrastructuring control over Internet traffic.”Clement Peranaud & Francesca Musiani, Free University of Brussels (VUB) & French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS): This research project will investigate the development and deployment process of Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC), a new Internet standard, adopted by the IETF in June 2021.

EU users can utilize JSON file control features in Windows 11 (and 10) to ensure compliance with IETF guidelines

Microsoft has unveiled changes to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) for the European Economic Area (EEA), including removing Microsoft Edge from Windows 11 and 10, allowing users to switch search providers, syncing data between their accounts, and retaining default options before the March 6, 2024 deadline.

Making Decisions: RFC processes are a poor fit for most organizations

... Upon further discussion, I found out that this “document and discuss” framework they mentioned was heavily inspired by the RFC process used by many standard bodies, most prominently by the IETF. This process, if you haven’t encountered it before, revolves around written proposals called “Requests for Comments” (RFCs), and an open and broad discussion about these RFCs. These RFCs form the foundation of much of the Internet – RFCs define things like HTTP, TCP/IP, email, and so on.

Refactor and Upgrade ntpd’s Extension Field Handling

Network Time Foundation (NTF)  received an ARIN Community Grant in 2022 to align the Network Time Protocol (NTP) Project’s Reference Implementation with evolving standards while preserving legacy compatibility. Autokey, a significant feature of NTPv4 introduced in 1997, had gained prominence in the NTP community, culminating with the publication of the NTPv4 Standards in 2010. However, the project needed to reconcile discrepancies between the legacy codebase and the updated Extension Field headers.
