IP Addresses through 2022

Time for another annual roundup from the world of IP addresses. Let’s see what has changed in the past 12 months in addressing the Internet and look at how IP address allocation information can inform us of the changing nature of the network itself. Back around 1992 the IETF gazed into their crystal ball and tried to understand how the Internet was going to evolve and what demands that would place on the addressing system as part of the “IP Next Generation” study.

The current development of DNS encryption

The DNS has been operated as a plaintext-based service by default since its first proposal in 1984. While it serves us well by converting human-readable domain names to machine-friendly IP binaries and vice versa, the plaintext nature of the DNS makes the service lightweight and could put user privacy at risk. Therefore, encrypting DNS lookups from clients is now in rapid development. ... There are three standardized protocols (shown in Figure 2) that have been proposed as IETF RFCs.

RPKI’s 2022 year in review — growth and innovation

With 2022 in our rear mirror, I’d like to share some perspectives on how RPKI evolved in the last year. ... The IETF SIDROPS Working Group (the designated forum in which volunteers collaborate to define and specify open standards for RPKI and RPKI-based technologies) was fairly productive in 2022 and managed to publish five RFCs:

Subdomain enumeration with DNSSEC

In my previous blog post, I described how subdomain enumeration and subdomain brute force in particular could be enhanced by taking the DNS status code into account, rather than relying on the existence of A or AAAA records only. ... The response is a bit surprising since only the RRSIG and NSEC record types are part of the NSEC bitmap. This means that non-existing nodes cannot be distinguished from ENTs, as the nameserver would handle both in the same way. This could be problematic if client software relies on the correct detection of ENTs and this issue was highlighted in the IETF draft “Empty Non-Terminal Sentinel for Black Lies“

Telemetry steps into the enterprise-networking spotlight

... OpenTelemetry isn’t the only project looking to make telemetry data more useful to the masses. The IETF has developed an informational RFC 9232 that defines a network telemetry framework from which organizations can gain network insight and facilitate efficient and automated network management.

If your DNS queries LoOk liKE tHIs, it's not a ransom note, it's a security improvement

... Back in 2008, IETF published a draft proposal to defend against cache poisoning. "Use of Bit 0x20 in DNS Labels to Improve Transaction Identity" describes a way to randomize the case of letters used in queries.

What happens to the tokens after an OAuth Authorization Code grant?

... When you use the Authorization Code grant, you stand on the shoulders of giants. Many many people in the IETF working group have spent lots of time refining this grant, poking and fixing holes in its security, documenting it, and building libraries on top of it. You also benefit from documents such as OAuth 2.0 for browser based apps, currently being developed, and OAuth 2.0 for native apps.

What Are SMB Ports?

... During the mid-1990s, Microsoft incorporated SMB in their LAN Manager product, which IBM initially built. SMB 1.0 was renamed common internet file system (CIFS) , and Microsoft published draft standards to the IETF, though these have now expired.

La telemetría, en el punto de mira de las redes empresariales [Telemetry in the crosshairs of enterprise networks]

Per què els cercadors marginen el català a internet [Why search engines marginalize Catalan on the internet]

Der Weg zur "best available technology" [The path to "best available technology"]

[The metaverse. How it changes our world]

What the New Federal Cybersecurity Act Means for Businesses

On December 21, 2022, President Biden signed the Quantum Computing Cybersecurity Preparedness Act. The risk of quantum-powered password decryption is increasing exponentially. The new legislation is designed to help federal agencies proactively shift to a post-quantum security posture. Agencies have until May 4, 2023, to submit an inventory of potentially vulnerable systems, and the Act directs the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to prioritize the adoption of post-quantum cryptography standards.

An F for the Gs: 5G discontent surfaces for 2023

There was a distinct end-of-term atmosphere at TelecomTV’s most recent Great Telco Debate, held in London last month. Along with the traditional pre-Christmas frivolity, came an urge to stick the knife into any telecom sacred cow that might wander carelessly into the discussion.

Going mainstream: four Web3 developments to watch in 2023

There are many ways to define Web3, but fundamentally it is a decentralized internet, owned by builders and users, based on blockchain. The global Web3 market was worth approximately $3.2 billion in 2021, and this is projected to continue growing in the next decade as adoption of new technologies built on blockchain increase. Some consider this to be the internet of the future; in 2023 it is poised to continue being an important topic in public discourse.

Extracting the Essential Simplicity of the Internet

Everyone knows that the Internet provides the ubiquitous connectivity on which we now rely, and many know that the underlying design was invented in the 1970s to allow computers to exchange data. However, far fewer understand the remarkable foresight that guided its design, which has remained essentially unchanged since its adoption in 1983 (see the sidebar "Brief Internet Timeline") while gracefully accommodating radical changes in applications, technologies, size, scope, and capacity.

DE-CIX: Internet exchanges continue to shape the connected business world in 2023

Internet exchanges are key for connectivity especially with digitalization accelerating across industrial sectors. Even non-digital products demand digital processes and value chains, and more and more products and business models rely on data and the provision of digital services. Whether it’s managing a multi-cloud scenario, building a smart factory, or ensuring connectivity to partner networks, companies require a combination of low latency, security, and absolute reliability in their network connections.

Welcome to the Era of Internet Blackouts: New research from Cloudflare shows that connectivity disruptions are a problem around the globe, pointing toward a troubling new normal.

The Iranian government’s latest attempts in recent months to stifle protests through internet blackouts, digital curfews, and content blocking have presented a particularly extreme example of how far regimes can go in restricting digital access. But a new report from the internet infrastructure company Cloudflare, released today, highlights the stunning global prevalence of connectivity disruptions and their increasing relevance to people and organizations all around the world. In 2022, Cloudflare began publishing reports that compile its internal observations about government internet blackouts and notable outages worldwide. As a content delivery network that also provides digital resiliency services, the company sees an array of signals when a chunk of the internet goes dark. For example, Cloudflare can assess internet protocol requests, like those for the routing system Border Gateway Protocol or the internet address book Domain Name System, to get insight into how a government executed a shutdown and where in the internet backbone it implemented the connectivity blocking.
