SSH protects the world’s most sensitive networks. It just got a lot weaker

... Ylönen submitted SSH to the Internet Engineering Taskforce in 1996, and it quickly became an almost ubiquitous tool for remotely connecting computers. Today, it’s hard to overstate the importance of the protocol, which underpins the security of apps used inside millions of organizations, including cloud environments crucial to Google, Amazon, Facebook, and other large companies.

Verisign Provides Open Source Implementation of Merkle Tree Ladder Mode

The quantum computing era is coming, and it will change everything about how the world connects online. While quantum computing will yield tremendous benefits, it will also create new risks, so it’s essential that we prepare our critical internet infrastructure for what’s to come. That’s why we’re so pleased to share our latest efforts in this area, including technology that we’re making available as an open source implementation to help internet operators worldwide prepare. ... We remain open to adding other post-quantum signature schemes to the I-D and to the open source implementation. We encourage developers to try out the open source implementation of MTL mode, which we introduced at the IETF 118 Hackathon, as the community’s experience will help improve the understanding of MTL mode and its applications, and thereby facilitate its standardization.

Taking Back the Web with Decentralization: 2023 in Review

... The European Union’s Digital Markets Act went into effect in May of 2023, and one of its provisions requires that messaging platforms greater than a certain size must interoperate with other competitors. While each service with obligations under the DMA could offer its own bespoke API to satisfy the law’s requirements, the better result for both competition and users would be the creation of a common protocol for cross-platform messaging that is open, relatively easy to implement, and, crucially, maintains end-to-end encryption for the protection of end users. Fortunately, the More Instant Messaging Interoperability (MIMI) working group at the IETF has taken up that exact challenge. We’ve been keeping tabs on the group and are optimistic about the possibility of open interoperability that promotes competition and decentralization while protecting privacy.

Evolution has its downsides… but maybe it’s inevitable?

In a recent Reuters article, the idea that Darwin’s Theory of Evolution might apply more widely than just to biological systems as we understand them was examined. ... Randy Bush recently reminded me of a quote from John Postel that has a less upbeat but alas most realistic take on the future of IETF standards development, which may well fit this model of selective pressures as a general trend:

NAT, ATM, decentralized search – and other outrageous opinions from the 1990s

... The gist of the NAT part of his talk was that the prevailing IETF view on NAT at the time – don’t do NAT – should be viewed as analogous to abstinence-only sex education. No matter how much the people giving the advice might believe in the correctness of their position, they were not going to have much impact on the outcome. In hindsight, he was obviously correct: most of the world’s internet users today sit behind one or more NAT devices, but his position was much more controversial at the time.

How the Chicago Quantum Summit is helping engineer an ecosystem [news release]

Building a quantum future means thinking like a systems engineer — considering all potential parts of the field and the ecosystem and integrating them efficiently. That’s what the chief quantum officer of Photonic Inc. told academic, industry, and government leaders at the sixth annual Chicago Quantum Summit last month, hammering home a point that surfaced many times over the course of the two-day event.

What does 2024 have in store for telecoms? As is our end of year tradition, we ask some esteemed industry spokespeople to pop on their future gazing caps and tell us what they think the biggest telecoms themes will be in 2024.

... Another trend will be the growing importance of quantum networking which in 4 or 5 years – perhaps more – will enable quantum computers to communicate and collaborate for more scalable quantum solutions. Quantum networking will leverage quantum phenomena such as entanglement and superposition to transmit information. QKD as an alternative or a complement to PQC depending on the level of security and performance required, will also leverage quantum networking. Quantum networking will see significant new research and investment by government and financial services which have high demands for data security and processing.

Quantum networking, AI ambitions and telecoms partnerships – October 2023 in review

October was a big month for quantum technology in the British Isles. Barely three days in, the first quantum communications link was tested between the UK and Ireland. By using a fibre optic cable named “Rockabill” (not to be confused with the volcanic outcrop and all-round fishing dispute magnet Rockall), scientists were able to transmit packets of light across the Irish Sea without the customary degradation in the signal that companies are used to when transmitting information over that medium.

Satellite Messaging: The 2023 Phones Trend That Wasn't (Yet)

... But the other roadblock potentially in Qualcomm's way is that Snapdragon Satellite is a proprietary solution. Instead, phonemakers wanted a standards-based solution -- something that adhered to what the 3GPP communications consortium established for non-terrestrial networks (NTN). If devicemakers went for Qualcomm's solution and the rest of the industry shifted toward 3GPP's NTN standard, those devices might be left behind if Qualcomm's proprietary connection dried up.

Is it time for 6G already? Traffic analysis says yep

If you think 5G networks have failed to live up to their promise, you're not alone. But the tech is still early on in implementation, although some in the mobile industry are already looking to what might come next. The first full set of 5G standards came with 3GPP Release 15 in 2017, with the specifications officially frozen in 2018. Early network rollouts came the following year, and many of the carriers around the globe are still busy rolling it out to this day.

The Internet Protocol Journal December 2023

In our previous issue, we published Part One of “Introduction to 5G” by William Stallings. Part One introduced the standards and specifications that define 5G and described the usage scenarios that 5G supports. Part Two, included in this issue, provides an overview of the structure and function of 5G networks. A third article, on Network Slicing, which is closely related to 5G, will be published in a future edition of this journal. This journal, as well as its predecessor ConneXions—The Interoperability Report, has covered numerous networking technologies over the last 35 years. Some of these technologies have become important building blocks for all networks, for example, Ethernet, which for more than 50 years has seen further improvements and standardization. We will publish an article on the history of Ethernet in a future issue. Other technologies have emerged, only to later fade into oblivion—an example being Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). Our second article, by Craig Partridge, explores the reasons why ATM failed. Modern smartphones and other mobile devices rely heavily on the use of numerous radio-based technologies such as Near Field Communication (NFC), Bluetooth, Global Positioning System (GPS), Wi-Fi, and cellular data. Our third article, by Mark Grayson, examines efforts to integrate cellular and Wi-Fi services into a single architecture.

IETF MENTIONS IN GOOGLE/APPLE TRACKING STANDARD

**********************

Google and Apple are closer to making AirTags stalker free

... "Version 01 of the 'Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers' specification has just been uploaded to the IETF," Rahman posted on X. The IETF is the IETF. He went on to write that "Apple is allegedly waiting for this specification to be finalized before rolling out unwanted tracker alerts in iOS. Google says that it's waiting on Apple to do that before it rolls out the Find My Device Network on Android."

Apple and Google could be about to launch their anti-stalking tracker tech

... Seasoned tech tipster Mishaal Rahman (via Android Police) has spotted that a specification for "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" has been filed at the IETF. That's a sure sign that the spec will soon be arriving.

< <https://sg.news.yahoo.com/apple-google-could-launch-anti-115921042.html> https://sg.news.yahoo.com/apple-google-could-launch-anti-115921042.html>

Google and Apple Will Soon Make Misusing an AirTag Nearly Impossible

... The company joined forces to develop an industry specification that would fight the misuse of such devices earlier this year, and now it looks like the release is almost around the corner. The involved tech giants have filed an application with the IETF, for a technology called "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers."

Android’s ‘Find My Device’ network nears its implementation

... Importantly, the proposed specification not only incorporates feedback from device manufacturers but also integrates input from safety and advocacy groups. The IETF has proposed the specification required to implement Android’s ‘Find My Device’ network. Interested parties are invited to review and provide comments over the next three months.

Apple and Google team up to bring AirTag-like unwanted tracking alerts to all item trackers on iPhone and Android

... Apple revealed the news in a press release on Tuesday morning. As part of this partnership, Apple and Google have submitted a “proposed industry specification” to help combat the misuse of item trackers. The specification created by Apple and Google has been submitted as an Internet-Draft via the IETF.

Google and Apple's joint unwanted tracker detection might be just around the corner

... Since then, progress has slowed down a bit. Google pressed ahead and launched an initial method to help you detect unwanted trackers, but it’s based on a custom solution rather than the industry-wide standard that Apple is waiting for. It looks like we won’t have to wait too much longer, as Mishaal Rahman spotted that the first version of the "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" specification is now available on the IETF.
