Hi IETF Participants,

This is the final IETF SYN-ACK Newspack for 2023. Normal service will resume on 8 January, but as usual, in the meantime I’ll regularly check for news and information, so we don’t miss anything of importance or interest. As usual, a reminder that if there are suggestions for items to include in the IETF SYN-ACK Newspack, please send them through. Or any comments or suggestions on the Newspack itself.

For those celebrating, I wish you all a merry Christmas and happy new year and a relaxing break. And until 2024, the happy reading of the last news, but first the usual note that the IETF SYN-ACK Newspack collects IETF-related items from a variety of news outlets and other online publications. They do not represent the views of the IETF and are not checked for factual accuracy.

Kind regards,

David

Measurement and analysis of protocols at IETF 118

The IETF met in Prague in the first week of November 2023. I attended the meeting of the Measurement and Analysis of Protocols Research Group (MAPRG), and here are my impressions.

Action Plan 2024: Global Internet, Opportunity for All: Delivering on the Internet’s Promise

... Equipping Policymakers with Internet Technology Insight: Educating and building trusted relationships with policymakers has become a crucial aspect of our advocacy strategy, especially as we increasingly see governing bodies making decisions or promoting policies that could fragment the Internet or harm its design and operation. In 2024, we will focus on: Continuing our Policymakers Program at IETF meetings; Helping participants gain a more robust understanding of how the open standards process at the IETF works, the technical basics of the Internet, and an appreciation for the open, globally connected, secure, and trustworthy Internet.

Big companies sign up to tackle Internet latency issues

... The specification paper on the IETF's website said the L4S standard adds an indicator to packets, which says whether they experienced congestion on their journey from one device to another. If they sail right on through, there's no problem, and nothing happens. But if they must wait in a queue for more than a specified amount of time, they get marked as having experienced congestion. That way, the devices can adjust immediately to keep the congestion from worsening and potentially eliminate it.

Internet no es libre y hay reglas: este es el organismo que lo controla [The Internet is not free and there are rules: this is the body that controls it]

Models of trust for the RPKI

In the 1980s, during the early days of the Internet, the global address plan utilized the class structure. Jon Postel, as the IANA record keeper, managed allocations of Class A address blocks while delegating administration and record-keeping for numerous Class B and C address blocks to the Internet Network Information Centre (InterNIC), operated by Stanford Research International (SRI-NIC).

The Road to Publishing Action 1 NetOps Scores

In July 2023, we started publishing the MANRS Readiness Scores for Actions 2, 3, and 4 (IRR and RPKI) for participants in the NetOps program. We didn’t publish Action 1 scores at the time due to legitimate concerns within the community that these scores are not (yet) an accurate reflection of routing security.

A new internet standard called L4S aims to lower latency, bring more speed to the web

Forward-looking: A new internet standard is being developed to drastically reduce network latency, boosting applications such as gaming and video streaming. While the standard can provide a measurable difference, many consumers may not even realize it's there.

Cloudflare reveals growth in internet traffic report and outages

... Speaking of quality connections, Cloudflare made a pitch for using the latest HTTP/3 protocol called QUIC. “It can deliver improved performance by mitigating the effects of packet loss and network changes, as well as establishing connections more quickly,” the company said. “It also provides encryption by default, mitigating the risk of attacks. Websites and applications that remain on older versions of HTTP miss out on these benefits.”

Why Li-Fi Might Be Better Than Wi-Fi: An expert on IEEE’s new standard weighs in

The recent adoption of IEEE 802.11bb has launched light fidelity, or Li-Fi, which opened the door into an era of wireless communication for advanced Wi-Fi technologies. Li-Fi enables Wi-Fi to use light waves instead of radio waves to transmit and receive data.

Large-Scale IPv6 Internet Reconnaissance (Part 1 of 2)

As IPv6’s popularity has grown and its usage on the Internet has increased, it has caught the attention of attackers. Typically, targeted attacks begin with reconnaissance to first identify the victim. Then active network scanning and exploring leads to exploitation of the target. This is followed by the attacker maintaining access, covering their tracks, and leveraging that access to pivot to additional targets. With the finite limits of IPv4 addresses and their high density and utilization, reconnaissance of all public IPv4 addresses is commonplace. However, IPv6, in theory, may change how Internet reconnaissance is performed.

< <https://blogs.infoblox.com/ipv6-coe/large-scale-ipv6-internet-reconnaissance-part-1-of-2/> https://blogs.infoblox.com/ipv6-coe/large-scale-ipv6-internet-reconnaissance-part-1-of-2/>

Large-Scale IPv6 Internet Reconnaissance (Part 2 of 2)

... Conclusions: Internet-wide IPv6 active scanning is possible and is being performed at this very moment. It is also feasible to scan private IPv6 networks just as easily and it is trivial to discover targets on a link-local access network. The tools exist to perform IPv6 Internet scanning and there are hitlists of IPv6 addresses to make reconnaissance even easier. Every organization connected to the IPv6 Internet can observe this scanning traffic.
