Dear Professor Jeong,

This is Byoungman An from the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI).

I have reviewed the document titled “Use Cases and Practices for Intent-Based Networking” that you shared.

As I understand it, the document presents various use cases and an overall operational workflow for applying Intent-Based Networking (IBN) across different network environments. It describes a closed-loop network automation architecture in which a user expresses high-level requirements in the form of intents, which are then translated into specific network policies. After policy deployment, the network state is continuously monitored to verify whether the requirements are being satisfied and to readjust the policies when necessary.

Overall, the document covers a broad range of application areas, including Service Function Chaining, SRv6, SLA management, cloud security, IoT, Network Slicing, and Green Networking. I believe it is a meaningful and useful document for illustrating the broad applicability of IBN.

I focused my review primarily on Section 3.5, “Software-Defined Vehicle Management,” which is closely related to my research area. My comments are as follows.

First, the document defines an SDV as “an electrical vehicle with a software platform.” However, I do not believe that the concept of an SDV is necessarily limited to electric vehicles. It may be more appropriate to revise the definition to emphasize that vehicle functions and services are primarily defined, continuously updated, and managed through software.

The document also appears to describe cloud-native systems, such as Kubernetes, as common or general components of an SDV. Since these technologies represent one possible technical approach to implementing an SDV rather than mandatory components, the wording may need to be softened to avoid giving the impression that they are essential elements of every SDV architecture.

In the comparison table, the SDV use case is indicated as supporting all IBN components, including Intent Translation, Policy Translation, Policy Verification, Policy Validation, Policy Deployment, Monitoring, Optimization, and Reporting. However, the main text does not sufficiently explain how each of these functions would be implemented through specific components and procedures in an actual SDV environment. In particular, it would be helpful to provide more concrete explanations of policy verification, optimization, and the reporting process for intent execution results.

In addition, since an SDV environment may be directly related to vehicle safety, the potential impact of incorrect intents or policies on in-vehicle networks and services should also be considered. I believe the document could be further strengthened by adding security and safety considerations, either in the Security Considerations section or in the SDV use case itself. These could include authentication and authorization of intent issuers, validation prior to policy enforcement, rollback mechanisms in the event of errors, fail-safe operation, and other security considerations related to vehicle safety.

Overall, I agree with the direction and structure of the document, and I believe it is useful to organize various IBN use cases within a common framework. However, the level of detail varies across the individual use cases. In particular, the SDV section could benefit from further clarification of the SDV definition and a more detailed explanation of how the individual IBN functions are applied in practice.

Please find my review comments above.

Best regards,

Subject: Request for Review on NMRG Draft - Use Cases and Practices for Intent-Based Networking

Hi Daniel, Aijun, Robert, Abdel, Alex, Yong-Geun, Joo-Sang, Bien Aime, and NMRG,

Could you review the NMRG draft titled "Use Cases and Practices for Intent-Based Networking" by July 13, 2026?

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-irtf-nmrg-ibn-usecases-03

In the last IETF-125 NMRG session, I presented the revised draft after addressing all of Jerome's comments.

- Slides in IETF-125 NMRG Session

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/slides-125-nmrg-use-cases-and-practices-for-intent-based-networking/

I believe this draft is mature for the RG last call.

Before requesting the RG last call in the IETF-126 NMRG session,

I would like you to review this draft for further improvement and share your valuable comments with us.

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,

Paul
