FWIW, I've used JavE (http://www.jave.de/), a very neat donationware
ASCII art editor.  It doesn't, IIRC, have SVG output, but if only we
could do ASCII art -> SVG then there'd be no edit, render, test loop,
particularly as to plain text rendering of an I-D...  I've lost track
of what SVG<->ASCII art tools exist, although
https://bitbucket.org/dhobsd/asciitosvg seems to do a pretty good job
(but it uses ASCII art conventions not used by JavE, which is not a
big deal since it's easy to fix by hand).
