Hi Maarten,

my contribution to this dicusssion mirrors what Robert and I did in 
JSContact to solve the same problem:

1) Prefer maps to arrays for representing collections, and limit the use 
of arrays to cases where order is important or the elements of the 
collection are not objects (typically strings).

2) Patch the entire array rather than single elements.
