Hi Manav/authors,

Some feedback on -07, which seems mostly to address more generically both NTP and PTP.

However, not addressed was some of the comments on the changes between -05 and -06 that I highlighted. Manav indicated that the -05 to -06 modifications were unintentional and that they would be corrected in -07 version. I have copied them here.

---------------------------------
1) Section 15.2 the following text has been deleted "When a Timing-capable/aware LSR behaves as a Boundary clock and receives a Timing message from a Timing-capable/aware MPLS interface. The LSR performs the functions of a Boundary Clock in terminating the received Timing message and re-generating a new timing message over another (or the same) MPLS interface."

2) Section 15.3 the following text has been deleted "or BC"

3) Section 18, the Applicability statement was removed from draft-04 to draft-05. It has now be re-introduced. Text should include the draft-04 proposal (before the entire section was removed) "o An LSR receives MPLS encapsulated Timing messages from a Timing LSP and terminates them, while performing the OC or BC functionality."
---------------------------------

Specifically with the new -07 draft, and in-line with above previous comments, I think the following comments would apply with the new language.

1) Section 14.1 the following text to be modified as follows:
"When a timing-capable LER or LSR acting as a BC receives a timing message packet from a timing-capable interface, the LER or LSR time-stamps the packet and sends it to the BC processing module. The BC processing module generates a new timing message packet, the LER or LSR time-stamps the packet and sends the timing message packet egress on a timing-capable interface."

2) Section 17 the following text to be re-added as follows (in general section 17 applicability statement may need some improvement).
" o An ingress LER that receives IP or Ethernet encapsulated timing messages from a non-MPLS interface and forwards them as MPLS encapsulated timing messages over Timing LSP, optionally performing TC functionality.
o An ingress LER that receives IP or Ethernet encapsulated timing messages from a non-MPLS interface, performs BC functionality, and sends new MPLS encapsulated timing messages over Timing LSP.
o An egress LER that receives MPLS encapsulated timing messages from a Timing LSP and forwards them to non-MPLS interface as IP or Ethernet encapsulated timing messages, optionally performing TC functionality.
o An egress LER that receives MPLS encapsulated timing messages from a Timing LSP, performs BC functionality, and send new non-MPLS interface timing messages as IP or Ethernet encapsulated timing messages.
o An ingress LER that receives MPLS encapsulated timing messages from a non-MPLS interface, performs BC functionality, and sends new timing messages over a Timing LSP.
o An egress LER that receives MPLS encapsulated timing messages from a Timing LSP, performs BC functionality, and sends new timing messages over a non-MPLS interface.
o An LSR on a Timing LSP that receives MPLS encapsulated timing messages from one MPLS interface and forwards them to another MPLS interface, optionally performing TC functionality.
o An LSR on a Timing LSP that receives MPLS encapsulated timing messages from one MPLS interface, performs BC functionality, and sends new timing messages to another MPLS interface, optionally performing TC functionality."

3) In-line with IEEE1588 'forward' (of timing messages) should be replaced by 're-transmit' (of timing messages) in general in the document.

Thanks,
Peter

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Timing over IP Connection and Transfer of Clock Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Transporting Timing messages over MPLS Networks

Abstract:
This document defines a method for transporting timing messages, such
as Precision Time Protocol (PTP) or Network Time Protocol (NTP), over
a Multiprotocol Label Switched (MPLS) network. The method
facilitates efficient recognition of timing packets to enable their
port level processing in both Label Edge Routers (LERs) and Label
   Switched Routers (LSRs).

The basic mechanism is to transport timing messages inside "Timing
LSPs", which are dedicated MPLS Label Switched Paths (LSPs) that
carry only timing, and possibly related Operations, Administration
and Maintenance (OAM) or management packets, but do not carry
   customer traffic.

Two encapsulations methods are defined. The first transports UDP/IP
encapsulated timing messages directly over the dedicated LSP. The
second transports Ethernet encapsuled timing messages inside an
   Ethernet pseudowire.
