v6ops WG,

The author team of draft-gundemann-hipnet (http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-grundemann-hipnet-00) is seeking review from v6ops regarding the draft which outlines a method using existing technologies to support more complex topologies in (advanced) home networks. (This document is a re-posting of previous draft).

We originally reviewed this document within homenet and presented it at IETF86 since that group is focused on advancing the home network and we wanted to make sure we had the right pollination of information across the various groups looking into the home network.

Given that "HIPnet" (outlined in draft-grundemann-hipnet) is very operationally focused and uses existing protocols (with some tweaks to DHCP) to support advanced in-home topologies (looking at both IPv6 and IPv4), we feel it's important to review it in v6ops (in similar vein as 6204).

The document is an extension to 6204 / 6204-bis and the functionality is very much intended as a compatible plug-in to existing home network devices.

To understand how HIPnet fits into the longer term progression of the home network, draft-jvkjjmb-home-networking-incremental was drafted to help provide a perspective of a potential progression which starts at 6204 and ends up in a more advanced mode of operation very much in line with the more future looking work in homenet (I.e. Routing protocol use, source address routing, prefix assignment via IGP etc).

We appreciate your time and feedback.

Regards,

Authors

A new version of I-D, draft-grundemann-hipnet-00.txt
has been successfully submitted by Chris Grundemann and posted to the
IETF repository.

Abstract:
Home networks are becoming more complex. With the launch of new
services such as home security, IP video, Smart Grid, etc., many
Service Providers are placing additional IPv4/IPv6 routers on the
subscriber network. This document describes a self-configuring home
router that is capable of operating in such an environment, and that
requires no user interaction to configure it. Compliant with draft-
ietf-homenet-arch, it uses existing protocols in new ways without the
   need for a routing protocol.
