Well there are now unicode code points for emoticons (as seen in the link 
you included) so I would hope those get used (because they are prettier) in 
which case they would not be a problem. Also, I think emoticons are used 
more for IM status as opposed to actual display names, and status is not 
something I would expect to see in a vCard. So at this point I don't see a 
problem with this.
