I’m very sad to hear of Al’s passing. He was an amazing presence among BMWG, IPPM and the IETF in general, having known him off and on (as my IETF activity varied over the years) since November 2006. I’ll greatly miss his enthusiasm, sense of humor, and dedication to the performance measurement and benchmarking community. The community won’t be the same without him.

My very first meeting, he welcomed the newcomers in the room and said, “Welcome to BMWG! We’re glad to have you. We’re the kinder, gentler working group of the IETF”. 10 years later, I sincerely hope that those of you reading this message are nodding and thinking “yes Al, you are right!”. He brought passion and dedication to our small corner of the OPS Area, and he’ll be dearly missed. For those of you with documents in progress, bear with me a bit as I take over his documents.

As many of you know, in addition to participating in the ITU-T, Al was a longtime IETF participant and chair, and brought the IETF and ITU-T into alignment time and time again. And he was the nicest imaginable human being. I will miss him.
