I see this as looking for a specific “payload” of information for a VEVENT. I would like to see a more general extension, with a EVENTTYPE: property that named a “schema” for DESCRIPTION: . The calendar CUA could then invoke a “helper”/plug-in to process that schema; if EVENTTYPE was not there, or the CUA was not EVENTTYPE-aware, the client/UA would just display the text of DESCRIPTON: as happens now which would still show the structured fields, there just wouldn’t be anything to process them.

In your use case EVENTTYPE: would contain “Maintenance Notification” or “MAINTNOTE” and the application would search for “Provider”, “Account”, “Maintenance ID”, “Object ID”, “Impact”, and “Status” within the DESCRIPTION text.

Other types of specialized events could use different EVENTTYPEs – for example “OUTAGE” with schema for “Reason”, “Reported By”, “Resolved By”, and “Resolution”.

Hi Ryan,

what also come to my mind, when reading this is, that it looks to me, that there are redundant information included: X-MAINTNOTE-STATUS:IN-PROCESS.

The event includes a start and end-time and wouldn't it be assumed, that during this time period, the maintenance is in progress? The approach you took will need explicit changes to the event even if it happens as announced to update only the status of the maintenance.

Thomas

Hi Ryan,

My initial reaction to reading this is that all of the new maintenance properties should be grouped under a single entity such as a STRUCTURED-DATA <https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-calext-eventpub-extensions-13#section-7.6> property or a new MAINTNOTE sub-component, similar to PARTICIPANT. <https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-calext-eventpub-extensions-13#section-8.1>
