Hi David,

Thanks for your good organization!

We share the similar view with Peng, Yizhou and Quan.

Both the two time windows are fine to me.

Subject: [Detnet-edp-dt] Organizing meetings - time slots

There have been enough confirmations to indicate that we definitely need to deal with all four time zones in scheduling design team (DT) meetings.

Putting those four time zones into a world meeting planner does not yield a pretty result - the only time window that appears plausible is 7a-9a US Eastern/1p-3p Europe/8p-10p China/9p-11p Korea (https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meetingtime.html?iso=20230308&p1=43&p2=195&p3=235&p4=33). This improves by an hour for Asia when the US and Europe go on summer time (7a-9a US Eastern/1p-3p Europe/7p-9p China/8p-10p Korea). That doesn't feel right for a design team whose members are predominantly in China and South Korea, where the meetings would always be in the evening. In addition, I don't function well at 7a, so that time slot might have to be 30 minutes later in practice.

Removing the Central European time zone opens up a second larger time window, 7p-10p US Eastern/[1a-4a Europe]/8a-11a China/9a-12p Korea, which appears to be much better for China and South Korea. That will not work well for Janos and Pascal. For the working group (WG) chairs, Lou is willing to cover for Janos as appropriate. For the DT, I've exchanged email with Pascal, who understands the need to rotate time slots, provided that the DT meetings are recorded (merci beaucoup, Pascal). That recording of all DT meetings needs to be done anyhow to help accommodate the varying levels of English proficiency among WG members, all of whom are welcome to attend all DT meetings. That second time window is also likely to be better for some WG members in other time zones (e.g., 7a-9a US Eastern is 4a-6a US Pacific, which is a bad time to participate from places such as California).

So ...
* First tentative proposal - first DT meeting in the 7a-9a US Eastern/1p-3p Europe/8p-10p China/9p-11p Korea time window (e.g., 60-90 minutes starting at 7:30a US Eastern), with subsequent meetings alternating between the two time windows.
* Second tentative proposal - meetings every other week in the hope of getting significant work done between meetings (e.g., on this DT mailing list).
* Third tentative proposal - first DT meeting in early March. The entire WG is invited to the DT meetings, so it seems appropriate to apply the IESG guidance for online interim meetings (https://www.ietf.org/about/groups/iesg/statements/interim-meetings-guidance/), including providing 2-weeks advance notice, even though that may not be strictly necessary.

These are all tentative proposals, subject to change (as I've surely overlooked something). Please comment, either on this DT list or directly to me (and if commenting to me, please cc: the WG chairs, detnet-chairs@ietf.org<mailto:detnet-chairs@ietf.org>).

Thanks, --David

Subject: Organizing meetings

Everyone,

Welcome to the DetNet WG Enhanced Data Plane Design Team. In order to organize a meeting, I'd like to understand which time zones need to be accommodated.

An initial guess based on the team members is:

  * Central European Time (GMT+1): Pascal Thubert, Janos Farkas(WG chair)
  * US Eastern Time (GMT-5): David Black, Lou Berger(WG chair)
  * Korea Time (GMT+9): Jeong-dong Ryoo, Jinoo Joung, Taesik Cheung
  * China Time (GMT+8): Lei Zhou, Peng Liu, Quan Xiong, Shiyin Zhu, Xuesong Geng, Yizhou Li

Please let me know whether there are any mistakes or whether I've missed anything.

Thanks, --David
