Hi, I don’t have much more to offer than the previously mentioned cellular equipment data.

In general, I see the on-off sleep cycle as an interim solution. It’s like a car, you either drive it full speed or none at all.

The goal of course should be to have consumption related to the performance/traffic, like a car. :)

Hi, I agree, the fundamental goal would be to lower the energy needed to run the Internet. For example, just going to less carbon emissions from the energy source only affects parts of the world because in some countries the energy production is already or strongly going towards a healthy direction, and the rest of the world will follow. Lowering the energy needed (both from manufacturing the devices needed and their usage) affects the whole world.

Intuitively minimizing power consumption while maintaining QoS are in conflict. Therefore, any solution will involve some kind of compromise between the two. This compromise should be accepted by the operators based on their quantitative judgement.
For example, I have seen papers which try to save power at the expense of the increase in packet loss. This increase is dependent upon how hard you attempt to reduce the power consumption.
Again, we need help from operators to sort out this issue.
