If you say so it must be true.

I thought that maintaining a real database of subscriptions would help to tell 
legit forwarding from, say, spear phishing attempts that use a false From:, 
especially if it's done in cooperation with the mailbox provider.  You know 
what I mean.

Admittedly, the argument is a bit contrived, with respect to the list purpose.
