ISTM that we have quite a bit of experience with MITM proxies (a slightly
different setting) and the quality of checking varies wildly, so I would
prefer to leave the origin server with the ability to do this work.

I'm not aware of any restriction on post-handshake auth for H2 (H2 was
designed before TLS 1.3).
