My example of VMs on a laptop is just to make the
gateway-is-external-to-the-host situation tangible to people who might
think that corporations would never deploy a gateway machine for a
corporate VPN.  (We know that they do, it's in Baker's document...)

Yup.  The quad-core processor in my the tablet I'm typing this on 
keep suggesting I boot up qemu to I can play minesweeper.
