From: Alyson L Abramowitz <ala@lunacity.com> Date: Sat, 09 Jul 94 13:11:56 PDT So you may not like the names The Directory, PC, or Word. They are the realities of the world. In order to communicate effectively they are the proper and accepted terms to use. One cannot rewrite history or common usage and effectively enforce it. Contexts are important. What does "Word" mean? In a Christian context, "Word" means the Judeo-Christian Bible. In the PC world, "Word" means Microsoft Word, a word processor. In the OSI context, "Directory" means the X.500 context. In other contexts, it many mean something very different. In the IETF context, we have not yet bought off on the concept that X.500 is The Directory for the Internet. So, it is appropriate in IETF contexts to say, "The X.500 Directory". To do otherwise is to risk much confusion. - Ted
