Yes, that's what I meant.

I understand the arguments for ASN.1, just like I'm sure people would
understand why nobody outside of such environments is going to start using
it now.

I'm simply saying that if people are going to dismiss other standards on
the basis of encodings, then I'd rather common semantics be adopted in a
new encoding than create new semantics.
