It’s just not sources you want to discover but a variety of resources and services. You can do it on ethernet with IP but you can’t do it on general IP (without group-only based joining). 

I’d argue that what is accomplished by SSM has already been accomplished with CDNs, granted at less scale, but maybe good enough. I’m just concerned downplaying ASM is like throwing away the baby with the bath water. 

Having said that I think we can deliver the multicast service model with various overlay solutions.  So the network can provide a multicast service just not a traditional native multicast service.
