I think it's an advantage AND a disadvantage to have this connection. 
The disadvantage shows up mostly when you try to convey this e.g. over 
the phone.

Party A: "Oh, you mean 'foo@bar.com'?".
Party B: "No, it's 'at://foo.bar'".
Party A: "Ah, you mean '@foo.bar', like e.g. on Twitter?".
Party B: "Well no, it's 'a', 't', 'colon', ..."

Having a different scheme name will avoid such confusions.
