I have started to do just that. A big point of confusion seems to stem 
around just what exactly "Markdown" is, and what "Markdown" means. 
People who view Markdown differently will naturally gravitate to 
different conclusions about how to structure the media type(s).

Other than the users, the most important stakeholders to this Markdown 
discussion are the Markdown developers. The original author, John 
Gruber, has been absent for years. I am getting discussions going in the 
community to understand what *they* think Markdown is. Once we have a 
working definition that both/all communities can agree upon, we can have 
a more goal-oriented discussion about what media type(s) and 
parameter(s) best represent the Markdown universe.
