I remember recently writing "internet" into a draft and was taught that RFC
4949 says the following (while emphasizing that it's not official IETF
position or anything)... I realize this is a small thing but would love to
know if there are other authorities here:

   $ internet, Internet
      1. (I) /not capitalized/ Abbreviation of "internetwork".

      2. (I) /capitalized/ The Internet is the single, interconnected,
      worldwide system of commercial, governmental, educational, and
      other computer networks that share (a) the protocol suite
      specified by the IAB (RFC 2026
<https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2026>) and (b) the name and address
      spaces managed by the ICANN. (See: Internet Layer, Internet
      Protocol Suite.)

      Usage: Use with definite article ("the") when using as a noun. For
      example, say "My LAN is small, but the Internet is large." Don't
      say "My LAN is small, but Internet is large."
