Apologies for the cross-list posting.  I have to vote with Chris on this.

'ws' is confusing to many and cryptic to the rest.  'websock' has the
advantage of immediate clarity to all.  The 5-characters difference is
not worth the cost of defining a new abbreviation that adds no value.

Think of this as an opportunity for marketing.  "websock" reinforces
the brand, while "ws" weakens it.
