I think it would be helpful in trying to stay on track if we could steer 
away from discussions of whether Basic English is a Good Thing, or meets 
its goals of being more accessible than regular English to non-native 
speakers (or whomever).

We've gotten sidetracked in the past with debates over whether a certain 
orthography or variety was a Good Thing, and the results were neither 
pretty nor productive. We just identify things and give them labels.
