There is a gastro/entero infection making the rounds right now in Europe.
Got that right after I returned :-/
Those five people might have simply come into contact with Europeans (or brought it in from Europe in the first place).

The last real case of food poisoning I can reliably trace was Campylobacter from the first London IETF.  Sat with 40 °C fever in the plane back.  This is a notifiable disease in Germany, but the health office gave up reaching out to the UK.

The developed country with the largest cases of food poisoning is the US, clearly because government inspection is pretty much nonexistent.  This is not likely to get better in the next four years (or anything else, for that matter).  I still worry more about gunshot wounds than about food poisoning when going there.  You do have my vote for avoiding a country that is so dangerous.
