It's not a hill I would die on, but let me explain the reasoning. I think
it's also the reason for the AP change.

kanji: 漢字
emoji: 絵文字

where 字 means "character". The 漢 in the first means "Han" and the "絵文" in
second means "pictograph" or "picture text". These are some of the few
Japanese things I know, aside from English-Japanese slang like "down desu"
(I'm down, meaning I agree with the plan).

The point here is that "kanjis" is not really written in English, and the
same rules should apply to "emoji", at least as a style point. I agree that
it's not technically wrong according to the dictionary, but I think it
would sound like something extra, akin to "the Google", to many people.
