It has been my experience that the reason to ASM is to discover the  
source.
Source discovery should be moved out of the PIM protocol.
With just SSM and bidir, there is a huge win in getting rid of data  
driven
events.  No PIM registers, no asserts, no worries on the last-hop about
switching to the shortest-path.

But all these wins are in the network itself.  If you don't have a  
topology
that has asserts or you don't have high volumes of multicast, you  
probably
wouldn't notice.

I see you're from boeing, just don't put any ASM into your instrument  
controls.
