OK, so you’ve taken both sides, in true academic fashion.

Which is it:
	- fixed offset is needed (I claim this is true for the data, you claim it for the header)
	- fixed offset is irrelevant (I claim this is unavoidable for use with legacy data to legacy receivers, but you didn’t want it because of performance)
