Well... I don't who "people" are here, but with my current markdown to xml 
translator I don't see why there is *any* need to allow someone to fiddle with 
the defaults of a hanging list (or definition list).

To me, a large sticking point is that the current spec is pretty pendantic in 
what it allows (by virtue of the schema), but then there are these hidden 
(attributes) fields that *do* allow an author to fiddle with the output.
