Android < 4.3 and Windows Phone have broken / highly deficient EAP
supplicants on board. There is little we can do about that (except for
lobbying).

Android 4.3 made *significant* leaps towards a good EAP supplicant;
likely becaue of the many complaints of eduroam users, just google for
it. WP8 improved its situation, but it's still far from perfect.
Luckily, Windows Phone is - and likely continues to be - a niche product.

Open networks expose your data payload to everyone. Sure, they won't ask
you for a username/password, and you could consider that an upside if
you don't care about security.

BTW, yesterday we had 1 million national roaming, and 100.000
international roaming logins; and it's semester break period. That's
IMHO a pretty nice figure for a 24h period and I dare challenge your
"many academics don't bother".
