I fully agree.

In my deployments too there is often an ULA or an LL that is manually 
set with some IID that is much shorter than EUI-64.

That is easier to remember, to document and to try with ping.

In addition to that, in my settings we often use fe80:something::1.  Did 
you see something like that in your settings?
