This hardly seems like a serious competitor, given that it doesn’t even
really seems to be a thing yet.

Also, a major reason for using Github is going where the audience is.  (The
social network effect mentioned in the article.)  Unless there were some
other serious projects using whatever alternative, it’s hard to see how it
would be compelling.
