I think that there is a distinction between using notepad to edit XML,
vs you used vi/emacs/eclipse/textmate with an XML-specific (XML validating)
or RFC2629-specific editing mode.

emacs' xml-mode is a significantly better experience than emacs in text-mode.
(emacs defaults to 'docbook' mode for .xml, which is actually much worse than text-mode)
