I agree we should consider smaller cities as well. Maastricht (and recently Hiroshima also) did so much to make IETF attendees feel very welcome. Maastricht was a wonderful city and I too would like to thank the hosts for a nice job last week.

I like being in smaller cities also.  But I suspect that small size was one of the contributing causes of the expensive and inflexible hotel prices.  We probably accounted for 2% of the city's population at the peak.  If we need most of the hotel rooms in a city, we're not going to have good bargaining power.
