Dear everyone,

I work at the Research Center Deutscher Sprachatlas at University of
Marburg, which focusses on analyzing areal variation in German from a
diachronic and synchronic perspective. We are also a part of the
national consortium Text+ (https://www.text-plus.org/en/home/), whose
mission is to preserve text- and language-based research data. A part
of this effort is to establish a repository for text-based research
data as well as a federated content search to better link existing
resources and to make them easier to find for researchers that are
interested in (re-)using those resources. We are currently working on
the metadata schema that is going to be used in the repository and in
the federated content search and have been talking about using bcp 47
as a controlled vocabulary for adding information about the languages
used in the resources. At Deutscher Sprachatlas, we own and provide a
wide variety of language resources from all dialect areas of German.
Tagging them with the appropriate areal information is crucial for
giving other researchers the opportunity to find the data they are
looking for.

Seeing as the bcp 47 in its current state includes some language tags
for regional variants of German (such as wep, swg, ksh, sxu), but not
others, we would like to propose a batch of variant subtags to cover
all German dialects as described by Wiesinger (1983) that have not
been included thus far. We have also included a few tags that refer to
broader dialect regions such as East Upper German and West Upper
German, since these are also widely used in German dialectology and
will surely be commonly used to tag resources in the Text+ repository.
You can find all our proposals down below in the body of this mail.
Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to propose
any improvements!

All the best,
Lisa Dücker
