Are we cutting any >backdoor sweetheart deals and sending powerful signals to the community? >Is this what rough consensus is all about? And don't tell me this is just >a number assignment, and nutting to worry about... It is just a simple number assignment and no amount of flaming by you is going to change that. An announcement to the development mailing lists of SIP and IPAE that they had reached a stage where the assignment of such a number was useful is a significant and happy event that I would only expect to be advertised. Is there any reason to believe that other proposals would not be assigned numbers on an equal basis? There are 14 free values in this field and only a tiny number of efforts that are trying to really deploy some test code. I wasn't active back then but it seems to me that this is roughly what happened last time, with IP version numbers 1 through 4 being assigned pretty rapdily. >Is there an Internet Standard SIP document somewhere? The most you could ask for is an Experimental RFC. There is absolutely no requirement that a standards track document exist for assigning version numbers or port numbers. >Does this mean that Jon can assign numbers as he sees fit? That's right. It's his job and it I see nothing wrong with his judgement. >Very Interesting!!! > >Hans-Werner >Forwarded message: >>From root Wed Dec 23 13:51:12 1992 >Date: Wed, 23 Dec 92 13:46:35 PST >From: hinden@Eng.Sun.COM (Bob Hinden) >Message-Id: <9212232146.AA00266@bigriver.Eng.Sun.COM> >To: sip@caldera.usc.edu, ip-encaps@sunroof.Eng.Sun.COM >Cc: hinden@Eng.Sun.COM >Subject: SIP now IPv6 >Content-Length: 514 > >Folks, > > SIP is now officially IP Version number 6. > >Happy Holidays, > >Bob > >------- Start of forwarded message ------- > >From: postel@ISI.EDU (Jon Postel) >To: hinden@Eng >Cc: iana@ISI.EDU, deering@parc.xerox.com, Christian.Huitema@sophia.inria.fr >Subject: IP Version Number for SIP = 6 >Date: Wed, 23 Dec 1992 12:34:11 -0800 > > >Bob: > >Sorry it took so long for us to get to this, and thanks for the reminders. > >Ok.
