Or you could replace "essence" with "core components", "range",
"core bodies that make up" (maybe without "core"), or something
similar.  My concern about future-proofing again suggests avoid
close-ended lists where possible and, while I share your
concerns about "splinters" I'm more concerned about future
changes and things that might look like splinters initially but
turn out to be the pointy end of spears.

But I can live with any of those choices, including dropping
"the essence".
