I think that's entirely typical. Speaking personally, the situation in CS at the University of Auckland was a little different while Nevil Brownlee and I were teaching there (Nevil came out of operations and I was an IPv6 bigot) but in general a CS curriculum treats practical details of networking as uninteresting.
