Thanks for the message. I do agree with most of your points, and may have had trouble expressing that.

In the last example you also described why the page numbers between PDF and TXT output will not sync:

But two of several advantages of the contemporary (xml2rfc v3)
PDF version is that it can contain and render pictures easily
and that, if characters are used outside the ASCII repertoire,
they are rendered correctly as well.

It’s not easy synchronizing page numbers between two paginated outputs if rendered objects are allowed to have different dimensions (e.g. ASCII art in TXT vs SVG in PDF).
