Maybe the scoffing you hear is actually at the notion that our mission
here in the IETF is seriously threatened by uncertainty about the
ownership of some domain name or trademark. We don't need to control
anything like that to do our job. To me, most of the bluster and rhetoric
about this is simply counterfactual, imagining that the IETF does, or
should do, something other that it does.

This is just entirely backward. There is no need for us to negotiate or
compromise with any government or corporation to accomplish our goals.
There is nothing we need that we stand to gain by negotiating or
compromising - but plenty we could lose. Taking us down this path is
reckless and unnecessary.
