Which is why those of us who often participate (as distinct from
observing/ listening in) remotely and who have argued, for some
years, for a fee have suggested some reasonably small fixed fee
and a mechanism for individuals quietly and privately asking for
a waiver when the fee would be a hardship ... approximately the
same mechanism that has applied to registration fees for
in-person meetings for a very long time.   If people want to
make additional contributions, see John Levine's recent note.  

It is not clear to me that trying to shame either other is ever
going to be a good approach in this community.
